SECRETS OF SURVIVING YOUR TEEN YEARS
Are you a female teenager who is struggling on the rocky road to womanhood?
Are
you concerned and/or confused about:
Your body?
Your friendships?
Your love life?
School?
Money?
Do you wish you had words of wisdom from those who have traveled the
path before you?
Do you want to hear stories about becoming a woman from everyday, average
women?
As girls and women, we are constantly bombarded by unrealistic, plastic
images of women in the media who live very different lives than
us and who have very little to offer in the way of guidance to becoming
a real woman.
Let’s face it- being a teen can really suck. And there
aren’t a lot of healthy role models out there to point you in the
right direction. You’re going through all of these difficult times:
- developing a woman’s body
- stress with school
- dating and friend disasters
- peer pressure
While also having to make so many choices:
- what you want to be when you grow up
- planning for your future
- who to be friends with
- relationships
- how you look
- how to deal with your family
…the list goes on! Often, you have very little help or guidance.
Sometimes, being a teen can be completely overwhelming. Adults
just don’t seem to understand where you’re coming from, or
they’re busy telling you what you should do, even if it’s
not the best thing for you. And your peers may not be able to help you
because they, too, are struggling through their teens and just keeping
their heads above water.
How frustrating and lonely it can be trying to manage all of these
things on your own!
Don’t you wish the confusion and isolation would stop?
Help is here! You don’t need to travel through your teens
alone! Being a teen doesn’t have to be so rough! You can, and you
will, find guidance, comfort, and hope from the stories contained in
this book:
- How to confidently surf the wild waters of adolescence
- The positives of becoming a woman and what you can look forward
to
- What to do and not do in romantic relationships
- Finding your passion in life
- How to make, save, and manage your money
- How to deal with losses and endings in a self-loving way
- Getting in touch with your spirituality and using it as a strength
you can lean on during tough times
WHAT YOUR MAMA CAN’T OR WON’T TEACH
YOU:
Grown Women’s Stories of Their Teen Years
"LETS FACE IT- being a teen can really suck",
as quoted by Esther Kane, in her newest book, "What Your Mama Can't
or Won't Teach You". This is one issue that you will read
about in regards to what our female teens are being challenged with every
day through their experiences during adolescence.
The idea of this book
was generated by the similarity of results gathered from interviews and
counseling sessions by Esther through her work as a counselor.
The stories
you will read are written by women of different ages, backgrounds and
cultures so that the author could grasp a variety of true life experiences
and views. "Adolescence sure isn't an easy ride and I am amazed
that most of us survived it in one piece", again another quote from
the author Esther Kane. As you read through the stories, you will find
yourself relating to one or more of them. These stories share different
experiences of adolescence, heartbreak through relationships, and all
a variety of positives and negatives we as women experience through growing
up.
"What
Your Mama Can't or Won't Teach You" is a well
written, easy read that will reach out to women of all ages. The
information shared in these stories is meant to give what
we all have wished for more than one time in our lives and that is, "HIND SITE".
The type of hind site that will answer questions about your body image,
choosing friends, relationships, understanding one's sexuality, dealing
with peer pressure, the seriousness of an education and even how to be
a good money saver.
Womensselfesteem.com highly
recommends ”What Your Mama Can't or Won't Teach You” as
a very good resource for our young teen girls to use to help them grow
in a balanced way and teaches them an understanding of their own self-acceptance
and self-esteem!

Being a 35-year-old woman who had a really hard time as a teen (I
nearly died of an eating disorder), I realize that it would have
made a huge difference if I had heard stories of teenhood from older
mentors who could guide me on my way to becoming a woman. I think I
could have avoided a lot of the mistakes I made if I had had healthy
role models to learn from.
For example, I would have done things a lot differently in romantic
relationships and respected myself and my body a lot more.
Also, I wish I had learned that it’s okay for teen girls to find
and develop their passions in life and to go for their dreams.
I would have loved to have learned how to grieve the loss of relationships
without resorting to hurting myself through an eating disorder.
Lastly, I had very little connection with my spiritual side and feel
that had I learned about this amazing resource of hope, comfort, and
strength when I was a teen, it would have saved me a lot of pain and
heartache.
Esther Kane, MSW, RCC, has collected a delightful
set of stories in her book, “What Your Mama Can’t or Won’t Teach
You: Grown Women’s Stories of Their Teen Years.” The voices
of 20 women are interweaved with each other to create a conversation-like
book of women talking about their early struggles. The issues discussed
are diverse and cover so many things that affected the way they
grew into adults. Their insight back into what shaped them the
most is sometimes funny, other times heartbreaking and often poignant.
Esther interviewed these women on topics that she asked her teen clients
they would most like to read about. What amassed is wisdom from
a generation of women who survived and are willing to share their experiences
to the youth of today.

As a therapist who works with countless teen girls, I see the
need even more in today’s younger generation. The girls who
come to me are hurting themselves through self-mutilation, eating
disorders, substance abuse, unsafe sex, and being in relationships
with people who use and abuse them.
They often do not see how fabulous they are and are constantly
putting themselves down and wishing they were someone else.
Many of them don’t even want to live anymore and they haven’t
even reached adulthood. I find this terribly sad and unnecessary, and
I wanted to do something to help change this.
I wanted to create a guide for today’s teens based on average,
real-life women’s experience and wisdom. So I set out to interview
20+ women of all different ages and backgrounds to gather their
stories of being a teen and what they have learned since then. The
result is an ‘I can’t-put-it-down’, gem of an
book.

WHAT YOUR MAMA CAN’T OR WON’T TEACH
YOU:
Grown Women’s Stories of Their Teen Years
In this book, you’ll find no “right” or “wrong” answers
to anything; just a wide variety of women’s experiences, wisdom,
and thoughts on many topics that will be of huge interest to you.
I wanted to make sure that this book covered as many of the most important
things teen girls wanted to know about, so I interviewed a bunch of teen
girls and asked them what the most important topics were.
As a result of their feedback, I asked women about these topics and
within their detailed answers, this is what you will learn by reading
it:
- How to confidently surf the wild waters of adolescence
- The positives of becoming a woman and what you can look forward
to
- What to do and not do in romantic relationships
- Finding your passion in life
- How to make, save, and manage your money
- How to deal with losses and endings in a self-loving way
- Getting in touch with your spirituality and using it as a strength
you can lean on during tough times
This book is an invaluable resource for today's
young woman, and a powerful tool for the benefit of girls
who may be desperately trying to "find themselves" in the
midst of some pretty conflicted societal messages. Its strength lies
in its matter-of-fact revealing of life lessons by regular women
from all walks of life. These regular, real role models share their
personal stories and portray a mulitude of examples of how they have found
their paths, and individually come of age. This book effectively
educates and empowers young women to see that they have choices, and
provide information that may not be available from parents, peers or
community.

What Your Mama Can't or Won't Teach
You is a well-timed reminder that the women surrounding us each
day have a story about their 'coming of age' that is rich and textured
with moments of joy, pain, excitement, embarrassment and confusion.
Reading it made me feel less alone in the remnants of my teenage angst
that still surface from time to time. Esther's book is a testament
that women of all ages have something to teach each other, and
that our stories need to be heard to provide road maps not only for
the generations to come, but for those of us that have paths yet to
discover.
